About Our Dance

Contra dancers enjoying fabulous French Canadian music at Black Diamond Community Hall

What is contra dancing?

Contra dance is an easy, fun, energetic community dance. It is done with a live band, usually including fiddle, mandolin, guitar, piano, bass, etc.
There is an introductory workshop at the beginning of the evening to get everyone off to a good start. Throughout the evening, each dance is taught, and prompted by the caller, so everyone is dancing together.

What's the Black Diamond Dance like?

It is a friendly group of people who welcome newcomers and dancers of all abilities. In addition to a great bands and callers, we have the most fun, friendly folks to dance with anywhere! All ages, and all experience levels. So come have some good active fun. You do not need to come with a partner. Dress is casual, come as you are.

What does it cost?

Admission is by donation, we suggest $8 per adult, $4 for anyone under 18. No one will be turned away for lack of funds, come and pay what you can, or bring a finger-food treat (equivalent value as the donation) to share. Most important is to bring your enthusiasm and eagerness to dance.

When should I come?

We start with a workshop at 7:30 to introduce the basics. If you (or the friends you are bringing) haven't done much contra dancing before, it's a good idea to come for the workshop. The dance itself goes from 8 to 11 pm (with rare exceptions, which will be publicized).
